Radius ball bolts?

Hi there,

does anybody know if it is possible to install the 2 radius ball bolts throught the small opening on top of the transmission inside of the car?

I do not want to lift the engine or transmission again.

Thanks for your help..

Even if you could get them in there, you also have to consider the felt pad and the cross pin that holds the bolts in place and keeps them from turning.

This was discussed the other day. Yes, it is possible and I've done it that way. I didn't find it too bad a job. Just block the wishbone down out of the way and fish the old bolts up and out, then fish the new ones in and install the new crosspin to lock them in place. Then you can stick the felt up in a V fashion to fit on each side of the crosspin. If the bolt pockets are worn too much then the bolts will drop down far enough for the crosspin to not engage the head slots. If such is the case, then you will have to make spacers to fit under the bolt heads.

Before removing the old crosspin and bolts, lift the bolts up and down to check for excess wear in the bolt head pockets.

Sly,
I did mine last year with the transmission in the car. I didn't use the opening inside the car though. I attached a small wire to the threads on the tip of the bolt and fed it down, and pulled it through from the top of the radius. Wasn't that difficult.

I did it though the hole in the bottom of the ******. It was not what I would describe as a "piece of cake." It was finicky but I got it done through trial and error. It helped to have a small magnet to retrieve the bolts when I lost them inside the bottom of the ****** housing - about 100 times - before I got them to drop through their holes. I stuffed the felt in after putting the cross pin in place. I found the aftermarket felt was too thick and had to trim it by maybe 30%.

It helps to know the correct "incantations". Suggestion: have the wife & any small children, pastors, nuns, etc. leave the area before you start. You'll be glad you did. My wife has learned to make herself scarce whenever I'm doing auto mechanics, plumbing, etc. for her own good. 😉

I did mine like jthomas6 suggested after losing one of the bolts and had major trouble fishing it out from around the flywheel. Others have had the same problem and you will find suggested solutions on how to retrieve the lost bolt by doing a search. I lost mine before I had asked how to here, so you are on the correct path by asking first!
I used fish line on the bolts, both the old ones when removing and the new ones installing after the mishap.
Good luck!

Hi thanks for responding,

the situation at my car in detail:

1. no cross pin is installed
2. wrong bolts are installed
3. no bolt head pockets are installed
4. no springs are installed

So, I have to order a Radius ball kit.

Are you still think, its possible to install it without engine or transmission move?

The cross pin can be installed from the hole at the outside of the transmission and just push it through, after I have put th bolts in?

BR Stefan

Yes, install the bolts first, then the crosspin and felt. Put a lot of grease around the ball and in the cups when you put it together. The cup with the hole goes on top, so oil can go thorugh it to lube the ball.

thanks Tom and others,

final question for the moment:

what is the original diameter of the wishbone radius ball?

I have to decide to take an orignal Radius ball kit

or

the aftermarket one with the rubber ball????
