One thing after another.. I promise I am a good student and do my classwork...

Fuel pump doesnt pump.. before I dig in too deep what are the main trouble shooting tips? 1951 8ba Glass bowl is the inlet side isnt it?

Thanks Guys...

Glass bowl is the inlet side. Pull the line loose on the carb. side, with the coil wire unhooked, and a rag under the line. Turn the car over a few times and see if you are getting gas. If no, take the gas cap off and try again. With the gas cap off, you can disconnect the line on the glass bowl side, and blow air through the line back to the gas tank. Make sure there is no obstruction in the line.
If these are ok, then it is possibly the fuel pump itself. You can buy a new one through O'Reilly's online or in the store. My local store had one the next day for me for about 50.00.

The new pumps are comming in from China, you know what that means. Have yours rebuilt by someone on here. ken ct.

I agree with Ken. I foolishly bought one of the new ones (made in china) and it didn't work, so I rebuilt my original one. Works perfect.

I have used 25 or more brand new Airtex pumps from local parts stores and never had a problem with any of them. These are the glass bowl type which I use on all the 32 to 48 Fords. They cost right around $50.00 each. The big problem is the flex hoses sucking air. Bob Shewman makes a flex hose which is advertised in the V/8 Times that is guaranteed for 5 years but should last as long as you have the car. These are made of materials used on NASA space craft. Contact gadgiteer@aol.com for info. G.M.

I had mine apart three times last night and back together again and still not pumping... everything including the diaphram looks really good and the rod is stroking nicely... Not sure what could be wrong or if I am off track... Hate to ship this off and it not be the problem... who works on them?

run a temporary line from inlet of fuel pump into a can of gas....see if your pump works then....if it does, look at the flex line like GM says....or backwards toward the tank....good luck.....Mike

You can hold the pump in your hands, hold a finger over the inlet, set the lever over something solid and stable and push down on the pump so that the lever is effectively pushed up. Release the pressure on the pump while holding your finger over the inlet. The inlet side should hold a firm suction for as long as you are willing to hold your finger over it. If it doesn't, your reed valves have crud in them. Try to blow out any crud with starting fluid or WD.

I tried all the above yesterday.. It wouldnt create any suction, then I broke the glass rubber seal, I am going to send it and the carb to ken..

Thanks guys,,

Just a thought 32 , could it be the push rod not moving enough up to give a full stroke , ??? and operate the pump enough to bring gas up from the tank ???

I dont think so.. we tried a small can of gas above the pump and it wouldnt even pull that.. tried the pump by hand there was no suction at all....

I think your pump SUCKS, or on the other hand doesn't!

Unless you have good "SUCK", you will not pull gas from the tank.

Sounds like you are getting to the root of the problem.
