Radiator shell issue

Hi all, I have an issue with my 29 Tudor radiator shell. Could someone please do me a favour and measure the distance as illustrated in the pic? (or a similar measurement that might help me?) My shell has had a repair to the lower face (the face with the crank hole), and I suspect it is now 'shorter' than it should be. The hole doesn't line up with the crank guide or the crank nut.

I have just bought a second-hand replacement shell but found it has had the same repair and is too short too!! I want to get to the bottom of this before I re-repair!

Finally, my crank handle needs to be inserted through the shell hole one side before the other, ie it won't pass straight through. Is this normal?

Thanks

Gus

My original 29 shell measures 21-1/4 inches from the center of the crank hole to the widow's peak. Your crank hole should line up with your crank guide and nut. BTW, it looks like you have a 28 shell, not a 29. At least that's what that crank hole looks like, though the photo is a little vague because of the reflection. What size are the holes for the light conduits?

Thanks Guys, solved. My shell is a little less than a quarter inch short. Now to decide if I should repair or replace i guess. I hear the repro ones aren't too good?

You are right 700. I have a 28 shell. I found the shell description in the JS and my car is 'probably' an early 29. It is a Canadian built import to New Zealand and has a mix of 28/29 parts and features. Thanks for your help.

Gus, the shell that you have is a '28 and used into March '29. It was changed when the headlights were changed to the "Twolight" head lamps and the holes for the conduits were increased in diameter from 13/16" to 15/16".

Your problem could be in your front motor mount. It might be a little too low or high.

Thanks Mike/Gary, I considered the motor mount but the crank nut is aligned well with the guide. My shell is the issue it seems. I wish people would repair things correctly the first time!

Great car Gary.

Sometimes,a broken cross member would be reinforced by welding a 1/4" plate on top of CM but this would raise the crank guide the same amount & make cranking difficult.
