I dont really know what this is, Sorry about the dark pictures but I did not want to polish it until I found out what it is...It is the exact same size & shape of the 1928 style, but with no evidence of ever being plated front or back, or having any blue enamel ever on it.. It also is completely flat on the back with no name of the maker ??.. Used on a foreign made "A" ??.

Fred: If it's flat on the back, but the lettering is raised on the front, it must be, what, cast?

It's definitely not '31 US issue, as those emblems were pressed stainless, with indented, not raised, lettering.

I know next to nothing about porcelain emblems. Are they flat on the back? Could this be the metal "base" of a porcelain emblem? Never finished? Finished but with severe damage (fire?) resulting in complete loss of porcelain?

Interesting item. Thanks for sharing.

Nice guess about being Canadian emblem, but no. During '29, Canada dropped the dark blue/black enameling & nickel plated them. Exactly same as US, you can see reversed stamped Ford on back.; one on my '29 is stamped 'Toronto' but have another stamped 'Colombus Ohio' whch came off a Canadian car too. These plated ones carried through 1930 & changed in early '31 to S/S type.
That bronze one appears repro/ aftermarket

heres a NOS one i Have
the clip is not plated, but the rest is plated
the manufacturers name is D L Ault stamped on both the body and the clip
it is not thin stamped stainless like the 31s it is diecast just like the regular ones
but there never was any enamel on it

IMHO the plating is the aftermarket touch. The plain bronze look just isn't that great looking. I know of one that is gold plated and the car was a MARC award winner. Some of my friends have '31 SS emblems while others have black enamel emblems.

I have one like it. It was on a 31 shell, and both are originals (I am living in Argentina). The emblem was made of cupper, and has rest of blue paint. If that interest you, I can attach a photo.

The Canadian vehicles use either an extremely deep blue or black emblem up to the end of 29. The blue/black is a glass and the nickeling was done AFTER the blue/black glass was added.
Canadian cars from the introduction of the 1930 radiator shell, used a Satin chrome badge, (as pictured) with no colouring, until the introduction of the 31 badge.

Here's a picture of my mid June 1930 Canadian made Fordor. It is/was all original when I got last year. The rad emblem is an original to the car and I have seen lots of right across the country. This is not just a local thing. This is a Canadian thing, special to Canadian cars....... (like Robertson screws)

If you have the Canadian supplement to your Restoration Guidelines, it shows this emblem on page F8, and there is a brief write-up above it. Not all were plated....

once again with the brass, dip that in muriatic acid and watch it shine . then clear coat it.
if you want the patina look, wave it over the fumes of muratic acid for a bit.

I have a stupid question? How do you change or in stall the emblem? I have one for my early 30 AA I need to install. Have done every thing but this....Dave

The emblem in question does look a lot like a Canadian Emblem that has no plating.
My avatar is an original 1930 Canadian Emblem, some of the plating is getting thin and the base metal is starting to show.
No, I am not holding the emblem, I was just photographing the shell when I first got it and it turned out looking this way.
Someone very recently addressed changing and installing emblems, I think Tom W.

Yes, I made a tool that works great to remove the emblem. It is a round brass pipe that has a beveled edge, so it only pushes on the very outside diameter of the retainer. If you search emblem tool, it should turn up, otherwise I can try to find and post the picture again.
