Radiator cap gasket 31

I recently ruined my radiator cap gasket with a radiator flush, It turned the leather gasket to mush. (I don't know if that would have happened to real leather, but that's another issue) Not wanting to wait for one to be shipped I searched every local Auto Parts store for anything that size, no luck. But, Ace Hardware has rubber washers, perfect fit. Stock #61275B. Actually fits and works better than the original. 2-3/8 x 1-1/2 x 1/8.

I purchased a new cap for my 29 and it came with a "rubber" gasket. After it spent a couple of weeks on the tank it expanded in size so much that it no longer fit inside the cap. I replaced it with a cork one.

My understanding is that the 1930/31 used a hard fiber gasket (Garloc) in the radiator cap and a Leather one in the gas cap.

..

Joop is correct all the original radiator cap gaskets for all years were made out of a hard fiber material ( Garloc ) or asbestos and the gas cap gaskets were leather

Thanks for the history and info, Always want to learn more. I was mainly thinking in terms of, if you need a quick fix, its as close as the hardware store.
