R-10 Borg Warner question

I have a 1937 Ford v8 with a r-10 borg Warner overdrive. I have noticed a cap that is over the govenor. See photo. There is also a plug on the side. Are both of these to put oil in? Is there no way to drain oil out?

Dave,
The plug to the right of the governor is the OD fill. See attached picture for the drain location. I'm not sure which trans your OD is attached too as they didn't originally come on 1937 vehicles. On 1949-1951 the OD and trans oil cavities are connected so you can just drain and fill from the larger trans fills and drains. You just need to allow time for the fluid to equalize. You can drain your trans first, let it set for a while and then remove the OD drain and see if there is any fluid left. This should tell you if the oil cavities are connected.

The cover on the governor is not a fill, it houses the points that complete the ground for the relay when the vehicle speed is greater than 28 mph. There should be a wire running from the governor to the relay (through the rail switch and kickdown switch if equipped). Since this is a non OEM installation I'm not sure how it is set up.

The fitting on top above the governor appears to be a vent. They have a loose fitting cap that allows air to move without letting in the crud. It could be used as a filler but thick oil doesn't move very fast so it would be slow going. I assume this is a torque tube conversion. They were popular a number of years ago.

I have a R10 in the torque tube of my '40 and you are correct there is no provision for an oil drain. The fill plug is on the side as noted.

A person can take out the speedometer drive or the filler plug and use a suction gun to draw the fluid out. There isn't a lot of fluid in there on a torque tube conversion.
