Quiz Question

Piston compresses gas. Payload weight increases tire pressure.

Imagine this: I have a heavy duty steel box. I fill it with nitrogen gas at 200 psi and seal it shut. Then I put a 1000 lb weight on top of the box. How much does the pressure of the gas inside increase?

None, of course. The reason is that the box didn’t deform when I put the weight on it. The pressure is a function of the volume. If the volume inside the tire doesn’t change when the car’s weight is on it, the pressure doesn’t change either. Since the tire is made of stiff rubber, once it’s fully inflated, adding weight changes the shape of the tire, but not the volume.

I suspect Bob is going to pose this same question to his club at a seminar, and then use our responses to initiate discussion. 😉

I enjoy reading your comments, that's why I asked this question. I have never checked to see if there is a difference in pressures on & off of the ground.
