Quick, Safe way to empty gas tank

Bought this wand pump that runs on a couple of D batteries for 13 or 14 bucks. Trying to set the float for the gauge is a pain.

I disconnect from the carb run a hose that fits diameter of gas line in to gas can turn on shut-off/on
 
Is that intended to be a running pump, or just a siphon with a small motor to start the flow?

Is that an explosion proof pump???????

I see an electric motor with brushes and gas fumes.

NOT IN MY GARAGE OR WITH MY MODEL A!!!!!!!!
 
Won't the fuel flowing through the plastic line create static electricity? With out the can toughing the ground the can is not grounded and the person who grabs the can may provide the circuit to discharge the static electricity..........not a good scenario in my book.
 
Disconnet fuel line at cab and drain it there, I do filtering before refilling the tank. Never use an electric pump, professionals use pneumatic powered fuel pumps.

...that experiment brings you on page one of the newspaper and insurance will not pay a penny...

FOR SALE!!!! selling my Model A's before they blow up!!! It works for me and does not entail removing and replacing fuel lines on the carb. It's a wand pump designed for kerosene stoves. Think I'll put up a poll to see how many Fordbarners wear suspenders AND belts.
 
I roll my A out of the garage to the driveway, I have a large 5 ft. long piece of heavy rubber gas line. Cut a flap in the free end of the hose, put the other end of the hose into the tank, stick the end of my air compressor hose into the flap, turn the compressor on, and the fuel is sucked from the he tank into a plastic bucket and whoosh the tank is empty along with any floating rust debris. Works great.
 
If I needed to drain my tank I would do it outside or run a fan to get the fumes out... I would also discharge any static I might have with respect to the car and drain the tank at the carb... Gravity works for the car, should work in drain the tank safely... Think Safety over speed, after all these are old slow cars what's the hurry...
 
If the float is not damaged you don't need to remove fuel from the tank to make an adjustment. Check the posts on Ford Barn for the measurements of a fuel tank dipstick. This is for a "30-'31 with 11 gallon tank and very accurate. Check fuel in tank with stick and bend float wire accordingly. I worked for me. No matter how you do this though, just think of the fuel tank as a large bomb with a very delicate firing mechanism. Good luck,

HA! Sometimes I feel the same way about some comments. Common sense goes a long way.

I chose a simple method. Turned off the shut off and disconnected it. (29 Cab it's inside the car not under the hood). Put a small container (about 2 gallons) under the shut off and consistent with the tanks design, let gravity do the work. I only had about half a tank, so only 2 gallons at a time didn't take long at all.
 
If you already have an electric fuel pump (for whatever reason), attach a hose on the output side of the pump and just let it pump the tank dry.
 
As a kid, I tried to "blow up" a coffee can half filled with gas by tossing lit matches in it. Didn't work! (elevation: 4,750 ft)
