Quick ? oil gallery plug

There's also a plug at the back of the engine. What about the relief valve at the front of the engine under the intake manifold?

The plug is in at the rear, dont know about the presure rerlief .The engine show about 15 # o p on new engine wit high pres pump.will have to check the relirf valve. Thanks Phil:rolleyes:

Are you running the fuel pump rod or did you remove it in exchange for an electric fuel pump? If you removed it did you block off the fuel rod hole in the block as it is runs through the oil galley and will turn into a fountain inside your valley tray?

I don't know how these myths can continue to florish after so many years???? There is no way a pushrod removal can create a "fountain" of oil unless the bushing is removed at the same time the rod is removed.

I understand the oiling system on a 8BA but not so much on a 59A. What about the oil pressure regulator spring and ball at the front of the galley in a 59A? If that is left out, will it cause the low oil pressure described? On a related question, do you leave out the spring and ball but cap that when you use a later oil pump on a 59A? Need to know cause I plan of building a 59A soon. Thanks, Lou

Removing the front relief valve will result in a loss of oil pressure on the 59A. I usually shim the spring to bring oil pressure control to be the primary responsibility of the oil pump relief valve. I also test each pump for proper pressure and flow, but, that is another story.

I, on the other hand, use all the relief options as original... I like to have tight bearing clearances, and plenty of oil flow... I think that if there is 30 lb. of pressure, that is plenty... My 59ab running hot has 38 at idle and 63-4 running down the highway at 70 or so... Karl

The relief valve assy was missing,I obtained one from a friend and installed it this morning. Is there any thing beside the hex plug, spring and ball end to the assy.Is the seat machined into the block.:confused:The oil pressure has not improved.:(The machine shop claims that the plug under the timing gear is there. My next step is to change the OP sending unit and install a mech gage. What effect woul a 80# sending unit have with a 60# gage?:confused:I ask again if the front oil gallery plug were missing would it generate 15-20# presure? Thanks for the help,Thanks Phil

If I recall on my 8BA, that front galley plug is at least 1/4". If the 59A is the same size, I doubt that you would get 15 lbs. with it gone. I'll be interested to see what your mechanical gage reads. Should have thought to suggest that first.

Is there a plug in the oil gallery behind the timing gear of a 59a flathead? Thanks Phil:confused:

The plug behind the timing gear should look like the plug in this picture that's on the left side. JM

I haven't been able to find the exact right thing. I can make one if a plain old plug is wrong, If it need's to fit inside the tube I can braze a rod to the plug and file it down to fit tight although I can't see why. If I can resolve this detail I can finish the motor.

John; When you come back to the barn you haft to bring a note.
My plug story; by; OLD...BILL.... As a member of street rod car club in the 50s ( PACERS ) Pasadena, CA. we would pickup parts: block with machine work done, all in a box and spend the next weeks putting it together we had some, tools and help. Well you know whats coming, yes the plug was left out.??? the kids dad had plumbing shop. when he / we got it fixed, he got 20 or so plugs, and we all got a plug, to have and to hold from now own, we had to show the plug to get in the club house, walking the halls at school, out in the parking lot, drive in " Bobs Big Boy Glendale " to lose you plug was not COOOOOOL some of the girlfriends also carried the plug, to backup there guy....true story ..
gust a note: that car ran good for years, and he went off to collage the end ............

OK Bill, I'll go with that and leave the locktite plain ol pipe plug there & stick the greased up cam back in and go...
