Quick fix on a repop brake switch

While on holidays and parked at a Motel the wifey notices the brake light is on and tells me so. I rattle the pedal and it goes out like its supposed to. This occured about five or six times to point that when I am driving I start tapping the pedal to make sure I am not running down the road with it stuck on (Drivers would not notice me braking if the light has been glowing at them at all times)
Last night I pulled this ****** mounted switch and took it to the bench. The two pieces of the switch are held together with four bent tabs like a Tonka toy. Straighting these tabs allowed me to pull the switch apart and admire the internal craftsmanship. Awesome!
The problem is the return spring mounted on the rod is soft and compresses over use/time. If you remome a circlip from the rod the rod can be pulled free and the insulater removed along with the afore mentioned spring.
At this point its a matter of stretching the little bugger a bit and reinstall in reverse order. Now the switch stays off until I put my foot down.......as Henry intended!
Cheers!

I had my crusty original apart to clean the contacts... surprisingly robust housing for "tin"... and a clever piece of engineering too...

Works a treat now !

That spring will only fatigue again and put you in the same spot you were in. You need a new spring. I had the same problem and it worked for awhile until the spring went back to being where it was before I stretched it. Just my 2 cents.

Gee, we agree.

I hooked up my origonal it was a little tempermental but it worked after about 40 years of not being wired in. It lasted two days when it died. I came out from friendlys and my battery was dead. is there any thing elce besides the spring that could make it die. ( havent opend it yet).
