Hello,

Being deployed to the Middle East and having nothing to do but be bored out my skull I started thinking (o.k. bad thing to do). Any how, I came up with two questions:

1) I am planning to put in a Mitchell OD if I can swing the money this summer. Do I need to tear apart the rear end to get the pinion gear off and transferred over the Mitchell? Then redo the preload, mesh etc.?

2) Is the U-joint itself greasable through a zerk or does it have to be taken apart and greased by hand and then put back together?

Just trying to expand my knowledge.....

Mike

??? No. 1 The pinion and its race along with the Drive Shaft can be pulled out of the front of the Banjo. After the Torque Tube is removed. I believe Mitchel has the tool to do this for loan. Then the Pinion can be removed from the Drive Shaft.

????No. 2 As long as the drive line is removed from the car pack as much grease around the UJoint as you can before you replace the Drive Shaft. This saves a lot of WORK and frustration. There is a grease Zert on the front half of the UJoint cover - The half that attaches to the Transmission. It is on the Bottom Passenger side. After assembly grease can be pumped in the cavity thru the Zert but it is very time consuming. The cavity - when completely empty will hold almost a full 10 oz tube of grease. _lots of pumping.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info. About the U-joint, I am used to modern ones where there is a zerk on the body of the joint. If I understand correctly, you grease the needle bearings inside the little cups by hand and then pack grease around the joint in the housing? Then how does the grease get inside to lubricate the needle bearings? Or does the packed grease lube the joint? Sorry, I have never seen one of these apart before.

Thanks again,

Mike

No needle bearings on the Model A U-joint, but once the cavity is packed full the cups will get the grease.

I hand packed the cavity, put the covers on, then used my tool kit grease gun. I had to refill the grease gun 10 times before the grease finally started comming out the speedometer gear hole. I had the gear off to allow grease to come out. I like Mystik JT-6 High Temp grease. It's red and very sticky.
