I have a 24 stud 48' egine I want to put in my 35' Model 51.

What oil is recomended to put in and weight?

This has the short oil pan that does not cover the clutch/flywheel, what do you reccomend I use to make sure they are covered? Thanks

There is a seperate cover for the flywheel. You need to find one.
Oil? Opinions are divided here. Some favour Shell Rotella, some favour other straight 30w, and others like myself favour 20-50w detergent oil. In the end I dont really think it matters, so long as its clean and kept topped up.

Are you sure that you have a 59A engine? It sounds to me like you have an 8BA. The installation is very different between the two engines. Where is the distributor?

Where is it marked 59AB? If it is just on the heads, then someone has switched heads, cam and distributor. With the pan you have described, it must be the 8BA style.

If the block itself has 59AB on it, maybe it has a 8BA oil pan on it right or wrong. If the heads have 59AB on them it does not mean it is a 59AB block. If it has the bell housing seperate its 8BA. If it has the bell cast as partof the engine block its 59A or AB Marf

59a and 59ab truck engines had 2 piece oil pans to allow the clutch to be changed with out removing the oil pan.
I have a 59a engine that is missing the back part also.

it has a raised 59 on the bellhousing??...if so, you can look for a one-piece oil pan....good luck....Mike

I recomend 10/30 oil. This business of using the 20/50 has no engineering fact. Oil has two purposes, one to lubricate and two, remove the heat from the bearing. Modern engines use even a lower viscosity oil. Thr Main reasion 20/50 got popular was it increases the pressure on the gauge. The flathead does not need more than 40 lbs and more can actually be detrimental to the bearings. Racing engine with larger clearances require the higher viscosity oils. FORD recommend 10 winter 30 summer.

I think that he must have a WWII style truck pan with the removeable clutch cover. These were made for a 11" clutch. You cannot get one of these pressure plates off without removing the pan if you don't have the special pan.
He will have to find the cover that goes with this pan.

WHERE dose the starter moter mount ?? on the pan or on a seperate plate ?? sure would like to see pictures., of both engine and the "PAN"...thanks ....OLD....BILL

There is a web site that has every oil pan, starter plate and transmission adapter ford ever made. Unfortunately, I don't have it.

Well, not to get too far off the subject but these old flatheads do get changed over the years. Right now I am rebuilding an 8ba. I want it as a "spare" for my 46 59 A-B. So, I am turning it into a 59 A-B:
* 59 A-B cam

* 2 bolt timing gear plate to take a crab dist.

* Using 59 A-B timing/crank gears (thrust is forward instead of back)

* Using a truck bell and starter plate

* 59 A-B heads

* 59 A-B pumps

Sometime in 20 or 30 years from now, some poor person will acquire this engine and write a question on Fordbarn: "What the hell have I got here?" H
