Questions

Hello Fellas,
Newby here and have a couple of questions for all you (experts in my book).
Joined last September and been hanging in the shadows reading threads on this
very informative forum. Really have enjoyed reading a lot since September. I have
a couple of questions, but first would like to give some background facts:

1) Purchased a 1929 Model "A" Roadster [ engine serial # 2485882 ] and took
delivery last August. Pretty Nice driver vehicle but with issues. Engine barely
running but definitely not road worthy.
2) Top or roof partially installed, lights / horn inoperable, carburetor leaking gas,
differential leaking oil, front end shimmy, just some of the issues.
3) Tinkered with light/horn rod and got operable, removed steering sector and
sent off to have rebuilt, received back rebuilt and installed.
4) Has a previously installed electronic ignition, cylindrical 6 volt generator,
speedo not working, no rear window.

Questions:

1) After installing rebuilt steering sector and trying to install light switch/ horn
rod determined it to be too short as not room for spring, spider & keeper.
measured rod and it measures 45 3/4 inch. It worked before I sent the
steering sector off for rebuild but will not work now. I realize a rod is
available at 45 31/32 inch, but an extra 3/32 inch is not going to be enough.
Any advice on how to fix would be greatly appreciated?
2) Since it has electronic ignition already installed, do I need to convert to a
6 volt alternator for ignition to operate at maximum efficiently?
3) For relatively long drives {at speeds above 45 MPH} should I consider
eliminating the Tilly carb and replacing with a Zenith carb?

Hoping I haven't been to long winded. Looking forward to help with these
problems. Not ready to send pictures now, but maybe soon.
Regards, Jim

Saw your zero (0)responses ...... one response always gets more replies.

Short backwards response:

3) A properly rebuilt Tillotson, Zenith, or Marvel, will work great on long drives, short drives, or just backing out of the garage at any speed.

2) A properly rebuilt stock distributor and a properly rebuilt stock generator is always a good choice for newbies or even experienced drivers "ON A TOUR AWAY FROM HOME" .............. because if on a tour, 100% of the Model A guys will probably be able to render some assistance .................. (plus there are volumes and volumes written on rebuilding and properly maintaining stock distributors and generators) .................... however, ............... with electronic ignition and a perhaps weird UNCONVENTIAL electrical set up on a TOUR, because of more modern DIFFERENT unknown electrical conditions ............. you could possibly have to be towed home if you have a non-standard electrical problem.

1) Appears question no. 1 needs more details of what "was" and what "is".

Is your steering a 7 or 2 tooth gear? A seven tooth takes a 45 3/4" rod and
a 2 tooth takes a 45" rod, the 45 31/32" is for a 30-31.

on your steering and horn issues it sounds like the tube that slides over the steering box needs to be adjusted down
i know i had that issue after putting mine back together and the bottom of the steering wheel was rubbing and causing a binding take a look at that first if horn worked before it should work again if things are adjusted right
good luck

Jim, could you delete your duplicate post at 8:02 AM it gets confusing with
people answering in two different threads.

Good luck on your 29 roadster, I had an original 29 with a close VIN to yours, mine was ,if I recall an early Oct. 29 (2403891) and it had the original 2 tooth steering yours should have the same. I would make sue the front end is tight including the king pins and ball sockets then check wheel bearings and regrease carefully adjust but not tight. I bought top and upholstery from LeBaron Bonney for mine. Last I heard mine is in a museum in Vermont. Have fun, Barry B.

Hi Mr. Bob C.,
I would gladly "delete", if I could figure how to. I can get to the edit screen but can't figure out how to delete.
Sorry

Hi again Mr. Bob C.,
Sorry I thought you were referring to the test thread I posted yesterday. I do not see one entered at 8:02 today?

Also depends on which time zone you selected as default. The thread/post referred to above shows at 7:02 on my computer.

Thanks everyone for the information. With this new information I will to resolve my issues and let you know of my progress. May be a while. Thanks again. Jim

Have you contacted a local chapter in your area? Sometimes looking at what other folks are doing helps and they can offer advice on where to get things done. MAFCA.com and MARC.com both have lists of chapters.
