Questions regarding my Y-Block rebuild..

Hi Guys, I just came over from the HAMB. I didn't see an area for intros so I thought I would do that here along with my question. I'm up in Northern California and just finished rebuilding the 292 Y Block and fordamatic in my '60 F-100. Hope to get a lot of good Ford advice from you guys, most people I talk to seem to give me blank stares when I mention anything non-chevy. Anyways, here are my questions...

My '60 Yblock has the non load-a-matic distributor. Does the vacuum advance for this distributor run off ported or manifold vacuum? Right now it is on ported but I was just curious as to what was required...

Second question, when I got my fordamatic back from the shop we noticed what appeared to be an air-line of some sort on the side of the case. This line was never hooked up to anything when I got the truck so we pulled it out and plugged the hole. Should this line possibly have run to the manifold vacuum port on the carb? I don't know if fordamatics have a modulator...

Thanks!

On the HAMB there is social group of all Y-block guys,if you click on Community at the top, click on social groups, then put Y-blocks in group search.A lot of guys don't know about the social groups, they tend to specialize in certain areas so you eliminate the clutter found in the main board. You will also like this:www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/

Thanks Jeff, I have tried the yblock social group for a couple items lately. I don't think a lot of people read the social groups sometimes...

This is the place to be for Y block advice. I think the hole you plupged in your transmission is the vent. Open it up. As the oil warms, the level goes up. When it cools, the level goes down. Air needs to be displaced, then recovered. If the advance on the dizzy is working right, it should work the same on manifold vacuum or ported. When the vacuum drops, it retards.

I thought loadamatic distributors ended in 57 on Ford V-8's. Anyway if it is a loadamatic (no centrifugal advance) you want it plumbed to ported vacuum otherwise you will get full advance at times of high manifold vacuum such as at idle and under load such as climbing a hill, less than ideal.

Thanks for the info MMB, I played around with the manifold vacuum yesterday and it didnt run very well. Also, FYI, I read through my '60 service manual and it says the 6 cyl motor still came with a load-a-matic. I fortunately have a V8 :)

Ole Don, Do you know where I could find a fordamatic diagram that might show that vent? I went through my service manual but didn't see anything showing this item. We assumed it was something extra that was added long ago and forgotten about...

Actually, the 57s were the first year that didn't use the loadamatic.

The C4 vent is just a little pipe at the top right front of the case. I don't know about the older auto box. Maybe the Hoosier Hurricane will come in and tell us, he is the older auto trans guru.

Ya, if anyone can answer that, it will be John.

Ok I know what you're talking about now. That vent pipe is still in place on my fordamatic. The line we removed was not that pipe, this line was in close proximity to the linkage. The vent pipe on my ****** is on the opposite side.

Factory hook-up for vacuum advance on your distributor is ported (no vacuum at idle, thus no advance at idle). If you hook it to manifold vacuum it gives full vacuum advance at idle and may cause a surging/rolling/erratic idle.

Yes , the yblocksforver guys are a good bunch to talk with . You can also pm , McTim64 here or on the HAMB . His is another good Y block guy to talk with . John Mummert on fordyblocks is another good guy to but call him on the phone , he hates emails ! Tim Eaton is another great guy too . Those are all to top gear head guys around for Y blocks ! All will help you out with any information you could think of for Y blocks !
Damn good engines !

Jim
