questions about 1930 A Pickup

I'm restoring a '30 A pickup and am stumped on two items now. Was the truck originally built with fender welt material between the rear fenders and the box? And what is the dimension from the rear of the channel that the tail light bracket is bolted to, to the center of the rear most bolt for the tail light bracket? I have tried to include 4 pictures of my A project, hope they show so everybody can enjoy.

I, too, am restoring a 1930 Model A Pickup. What color is the pickup? Appears to be some type of blue. Do you have the name of the color, as well as the paint type and paint codes?

My pickup is a 31 and it has the fender welt between the fender and the box spacer where the fender bolts on. See picture.
Am not sure what you mean about the distance on the tail light bracket as on mine the far most hole is not used. Also see picture

Yes welting between fender and bed and down and out including end of running board. Tail light has a metal angle that the tail light bracket attaches to riveted to bed.

The original color is Blue Rock Green, I'm using Du Pont on this restoration... I want to say it's centari. It was discontinued after my first 2 gallon purchase, needed more to get full coverage on the box. I've been working off and on this one for about ten years now, got the most done in the last six years. Did some digging and found the paint mix card for my paint dated 9-20-2004! Paint number GS728AH Alt:1-centari. And I bought the 401R wet look hardener. I had my original steering column drop cap with me when I went to the paint store, they called the help number for dupont and they gave us a number to look at for a color. It was very close to my original piece but I wanted closer if possible. So they started mixing up little sample bottles of paint and we would dab some on the part and go out into the sunlight and do a comparison. I finally settled on this paint number as the closest to my part. I get a lot of complimets from people when I show them the project under flourescent lighting. It really looks rich. My ulitimate goal is gloss black wheels when finished, so it will look like it rolled off the assembly line when completed, except for the varnished oak of course.

Photos here.28-29 had wood block? approximately 9"to the first rivit

Afordman in your picture you have two bolts holding the bracket and wood block in place, measure from the center of the rear bolt to the edge of the metal channel it is bolted to. Gary WA I have my original block of wood and mounting bracket/arm from my original box and it was not rivited as I also have the original bolts as well. I sold the box to my helper and he put it on his son's model A that is now on the other side of the state.

Gary WA your set up is different than mine, my pick up was built in sept. 1930. Thanks for the pics. I have a few pics of me like in your avatar... my dad would say that's how I got my start in the hobby. I'll be 50 in september good lord willing!

cars2cool. I think I figured out what you are asking, the right hand bolt (the one closest to the tailgate) is 7 1/2 inches to the end of the channel that it bolts to. The left hand bolt (the one closest to the front of the box) is 9 inches. The distance out from the box is approximately 3/8 inch.
I hope this helps you. Attachment included

Yes - That's the info I'm looking for. Hopefully you don't have a problem with the light or license plate rubbing on the rear fender. Thanks for the help.

The plate sets at a small angle to the fender on mine, maybe this picture explains it a little better. My pickup has been done since 1995. Yours brings back a lot of memories on how mine used to look. If you need somemore info just ask.

afordman - The dimensions you gave me, are those to center of the bolt heads or to the edges? The 3/8" measurement puts the bolt very close to the edge of the vertical break of the box support channel.

On the pickups the license plate bracket is reversed so the plate will miss the rear fender. On the repo brackets you may have to bend the sides slightly to fit around the Tea Cup tail light.

ok i'm confused.
ours is a 31 pickup and the bed is different or at least appears to be. Ours the bed floor has no metal strips or metal cover in the center, just planks. Did someone raise the bed floor on ours or was this normal for a 31?

Ours also has a long piece of wood that runs basically from the metal frame all along the side of the bed underneath to the tailgate on each side.

Reason I ask is i've suspected someone has modified the bed but am unsure.

Since you have a 31 you may have a wide bed. The narrow bed pickup has a ~40 inch tail gate and two hinges. What do you have?

Its definitely a widebed. I've been looking for some kind of illustration of the wood bracing underneath as we're going to be replacing a lot of it.

Don't believe the welting goes a the end of the runningboards; when installed that way it creates a dam and the running boards will not drain off water.

Ron, you are correct. No welting between the fender and the running board.. The welting ends where the two meet.

Is this the same Doug Cox that used to be a beltway bandit? If it is, I need to say thanks for all the great pictures and help over the past few years on some tough details that I couldn't figure out on my own. I paused briefly on the A pickup project to focus on my '56 F100. Now that it is done except for working out the bugs I am back on the "A" again. Knud
