Question on restoring an original steering wheel

What should be used as a finish after the basic restoration of imperfections have been fixed? The finish should be satin. The last sentance in the "Guidelines" under Steering Wheel in italics says "No steering wheel should be painted". I have a beautiful original wheel that was downgraded as a Reproduction. I'm think it was downgraded for being too shinny (which it is ) and the sheet mismarked. So, how can I correct the finish to appear satin without using satin colored paint?

I have been sucessful in "softening" the finish on the two original, unpainted steering wheels in my Coupe and Roadster by rubbing the surface with a very fine steel wool. Gar Williams

The original steering wheel has "flecks, and specks" in the material. I'm afraid that unless you have an already perfect wheel (no repairs) you're out of luck.

If you do have a perfect wheel butchers wax will work to seal the pores with minimum shine.

Downgraded for being to shinny? It was a call on your green truck? If it is this is not the first time showing this truck. How did you do the last time? They always come up with something [don't they].

It's the first showing on a National Level. I put it in a Regional to see what needed to be corrected then after fixing everything I wanted to try at the National Level. I know it's tough to be a judge and don't fault them. I appreciate the comments so I can continue making improvements. I think it all works out in the end. No doubt some things are missed and other things not graded appropriately. I just need to figure out how to refinish the steering wheel so there will be no question regarding it's originality next time.

I have a feeling this could become a never ending saga. :D
