Question for driveline experts

I have Ford Granada 8" and '68 4 speed top loader out of a 390 Fairlane; can I use the top loader trans. yoke (it's bigger than the small block version) and I don't have a pinion yoke for the 8" yet. This in a '36 Ford. What do I do for a drive shaft?

They make a U joint that has both size, one cross for small and other cross for big side.
So you can use ether a big shaft to small yoke or small shaft to big yoke. I got mine U at NAPA

For a driveshaft, look for a company in your area that makes them. You will have to measure for length. The slip yoke should extend about 1 inch outside of the rear of the trans when measuring. The driveshaft guy should be able to recommend universals.

Paul, thanks for the info. Did some research on your suggestion and found a shop here in town that can do it all for me.

36Tudor, What engine are you using? If you are putting that 390 Toploader on a small block Ford, you need a different input shaft! The 390 trans has a shorter input shaft than a 289/302 Toploader so the shaft will not reach into the pilot bearing on a small block and will cause you grief. Ask me how I know!

The top loader is going behind an 8BA and you're correct about the shorter input shaft and because of that it works just right with the flathead.

Not to get too far off topic here, but I was under the impression that the FE (big block) Toploader had the longer input shaft. I'm also thinking the truck bellhousings for the FE are a bit longer than the ones used on cars, which effectively makes the input shaft too short. After listening to you gentlemen I think my best option will be to bolt the trans to the bell and check what I will have. Thanks for the info.

I keep stuff, just don't always know were I kepted it.
I went out and hunted down the old boxU-joint # on box Precision napa label t0026 049262 then big # 026,the open flap is long gone, lucky I could even find box ,it's been two years after fixing my shaft. I know there is also a U that has longer arm on cross listed in Speedway cat. but that one didn't fit mine.

Nope - the FE's had a shorter shaft. I had a Model A with a Boss 302 and the 1 3/8 shafted toploader and had to make an extended pilot bearing for it. Don't know about the truck situation.

All you have to do is make a custom (extended)pilot bushing. That is what I did.
