Question about Halogen Headlights Conversions

Needs some input from maybe someone who has had experience using the 6 volt Halogen headlight conversion kits. Was considering using on 1939 Pick-up. I am talking about the kit that comes with reflectors, wiring, gaskets, and bulbs. Do they give that much more light and do they work ok with the existing generator and any other info anyone can provide will be appreciated?

The easy way is the direct fit bulbs --no changes needed,, no problems with using 6V generator.

The bulbs made in India, China are not as good as bulbs from --
http://classicandvintagebulbs.com/page2.html there are usa dealers for them

I have had them in my model A for 10 years, they will light up signs for at least .3 mile --even though my reflectors are not perfect. --made the car a joy to drive at night

Many of the aftermarket reflectors are not formed for good focus.

the conversions that use H-4 type bulbs need more amps, heavier wire

A very bright bulb that is not focused will give you less usable light than a lower wattage bulb that is focused.

If you're thinking of switching over to SEALED BEAM halogens...don't. The generator won't be able to keep up with them. I Posted this in another Post about halogen headlights, and failed to realize that the Poster was talking about NON sealed beams...DOH!

I agree 100% with Kurt. I replaced my old style headlight bulbs with direct fit halogen bulbs and I can see much better now while driving at night. When I run on high beam, my headlights are almost as bright as any modern car on the road. I did have to set the third brush up on my generator to produce more current (amps). They also stopped my wife from complaining that she could not see while riding with me at night. Anytime I can keep her happy, it's a good thing.:):D

I put a set of the 6v conversion bulbs in my 32 and the dim is way too dim. Bright works fine. I am running a 6v alt so do not have a juice problem.
Somehow I think the bulbs throw light the wrong way when on dim. "The kit came from one of the major repop parts venders.

I am not wanting to use the sealed beam halogens bulbs but rather the small type whereby I can keep the appearance original. I saw in one of the catalogs a kit that had reflectors, wiring, bulbs, and gaskets for just over a hundred bucks. I will still need to buy the frame that holds ther reflectors. I currently have 6 volt sealed beam bulbs but was hoping and considering going for the origial look but weanted all the light I could get.

Several of the guys I know, myself included, that converted their '36-39 headlights to halogen were very disappointed with the quality of the light.
The bulbs used in the '36-39 reflector headlights are called "pre-aimed", they are made to work in conjunction with the original headlight lens. The halogen bulbs are defused in a different manner, therefore the light is not directed to the road correctly.
A friend of mine that has a '37 sedan corrected his light problem by purchasing aftermarket clear lens, then his halogens worked fine.
I am changing mine back to stock reflectors using Painless Bright Bulbs...
