Question about frame number and production year

I hope someone out there can shed some light on this. According to the information I can find the engine (or VIN) on ford cars in the model year 1947 run from 1412708 to 2071231, and 1948 is from 1984859 to 2381447. My first question is how can they overlap? My second question and perhaps most importantly, how can a car titled as a 1947 have a VIN of 2180970? This would seem to have a number well into the 1948 model year. Thanks for your help.

For 1947 the Ford 100HP V8 the range is 799A-1412708 to 799A-2071117. There is overlap from 47 to 48 some 47 engines were used in early 48 but the prefix changes from 799A to 899A the lowest number used in 48 for the V8 is 899A-1984859

I agree with Terry, however, he made have had a typo. the beginning frame numbers fir the V8 cars were as stated 1,412,708 through 2,071,231 for the 1947 models. The 1948 V8 model began at 1,984,859 through 2,381,447 as your post stated. Never wasting anything Ford would continue to use already produced parts in the next model year until the supply was exhausted. Also, as stated by Terry the prefix on the frame is 799A for 1947 year cars and 899A for the 1948 cars. Remember serial numbers were engine numbers and put on the frame at assembly. All engines at that time were built at the Rouge assembly plant and given sequential numbers. Original cars also have the serial number on the transmission but NOT on the engine.

Seems if the number you have supplied is correct the car was built as a 1948, Another help in dating the car may be the glass bugs (if the original glass is still in the car). Titles as you see often can be incorrect, additionally the 1948 models had very minimal changes from the 1947 models, and many were only instituted at some (not all) assembly plants. LouB.

The title definitely says 1947 and it is a V8 car. I have no idea why the number appears to be a 1948. Thus, the reason for my question. The car did not have an engine or transmission when I got it so I don't have that to go on. The only piece of good glass was the rear curved glass which is in excellent shape but contains no bug. No other glass to look at. The entire car had already been sandblasted and it sat in a garage for many years before I aquired it. Lots of clean metal but no interior or chrome to go on. It will be a very nice car but the title information will help with locating the correct parts. There are many differences from early to late 1947 with regards to trim and interior.

perhaps, as a '48 car, it was sold in '47??....don't know about then, but 2011 cars came out in 2010....maybe same back then and it was registered and titled in '47....just a thot...Mike
