Puzzled on which bearings to buy

39-42 239 ci flatheads had 2.139 rod journals--pre-war 99 block--post-war 59 -same

BTW Happy belated Birthday Walt!
You are a great engine builder!
When was your last 1939-1942 Merc engine build?
Gene Tulsa

Your right G32 the 39-42 Merc engine had 2.139 rod journals. I knew that but forgot it. I don't really remember building a 39-42 merc engine. I cain't remember what I had for breakfast. Walt

Did the Canadian 21 studs have this odd crank?

Only Pilots. The Canadian 221 cranks that take 41A style bearings have shorter journals, cause those 41A bearings are unflanged. Of course, you can run the regular 39-42 style 221 floaters on that crank and rods assembly, same as you can run the 32-38 style flanged floaters on Pilot crank/ rods, as you've already mentioned.

DWester: you confirmed 59 w std bore @ 3 3/16"--same as late FHs.
Please confirm stroke-- sb 3.75". Determine rod casting #s in channel on side on beam--also rod caps #s. SB 2.139 if std. Find main caps casting #s.
Determine if crank journals have been turned. Look for mains / rods undersize
stamped on outer edge [around or about--look hard] of front crank counterweight.
Determine condition / wear on journals & bearings--measure clearances. Next---;

Poster got really busy. Today it's a funeral. Hopefully by Monday I'll be able to get back on it and get you some more info.

I'm learning more than I expected and am very grateful for all the responses from you all.

OK. The stroke is 3.75

Rod casting #'s are 8BA on one side and something different on each rod on the opposite side, such as T A348, T B355, T B340 etc. There's a 1A above those #'s

Rod caps are similar with 8BA on all and opposite side is 862, etc. with various #'s.

Mains casting #'s are, front 6329, Middle 6330 and rear is G 21A 6325.

I measured the rod journals with a non dial caliper and got 2 9/64th. That's as close as you can get to 2.139 I suppose.

Mains were 2 1/2.

No markings on the crank that I could find.

Dwester: Good! Late Ford 239 rotating assembly in 59 block--good combo.

Another info check is bearing part #s on back of bearing shells.
Next-- accurate determination of wear on journals mains & rods. Examination
of wear on bearings---measure clearances all journals--mechanic / machinist experience / skill here. Watch for under size stampings.
Think we're clear on what you have---stay sharp ask -talk if not sure.
Be good to review the main bearing, caps , seals on this combo , especially
rear main --good discussion re that on here.
Having fun--Good luck. Gene Tulsa

Well, I know that I'M having fun.:) It's really an honor to be able to listen to the wealth of knowledge that you all have here. Most of my engine work was in the mid 60's to the mid 70's and was mostly on small block chevys. I'm enjoying diving into the flatheads. Thanks you guys. I'll be back, no doubt.

Dwester: Cast #s on front & center m caps are are generic #s for fr &
ctr caps --SB another Model # -- ie rear main cap.

Rear cap # G 21 a (prefix=model for 1942 221 ci block)-- 6325 genrc rear maincap ---original ??--but should be the same -- probably
used from another engine on rebuild. Might be problem--maybe not.
Red flag to double-check clearance and smooth turning on assembly.
I'm still learning!

OK guys. It took me longer to get to this point that I had figured, so just to be clear, am I looking to buy 59A mains and the rods are 49-53?

Just to confuse matters even further, here in New Zealand we got the Canadian engines. My '47 C59A has insert bearings, but they are quite thick..... different to the 8BA, and very hard to find, consequently very expensive.

My engine is out of a 48 truck and is the 59a block. It uses the insert style bearings, so there must have been a mixture going on in 48.
