Oldgas, what happen when you jack the front wheels off the ground and then turn the steering wheel...with the engine running?

When a 1956 Mercury "linkage-type" power steering system goes completely stiff (armstrong steering) despite a tight belt and full fluid, the failure is almost always caused by a stuck internal bypass valve or a loss of hydraulic pressure.

To add to that, the '54 manual has in depth repair info of both the PS pump and the do-dad that is installed in the linkage. I'm guessing the '56 Merc manual does too.
