Pump Adjustment?

I purchased a new “Leakless” (Snyder’s A-8503-B) and am not certain if it needs adjusting or if the nut is just there for looks. I have not installed the pump yet and the nut arrived finger tight right out of the box.
 
Mine from Snyder's came with instructions saying to leave the nut barely snug...just so it doesn't vibrate loose. The seal at the rear of the pump is doing the sealing,and that nut has a graphite packing that's to be used as a backup should the rear seal fail. That way you can tighten the nut,compressing the graphite packing and still get home if that should occur.
