Pulling oil pan

A while back I changed out my oil pan for no other reason than I wanted the earlier version with the clean out. Upon completion I noticed that the 4.25 litre of oil at a change was too much as per the stick reading. I kept wondering why did the oil level in the pan increase with the same amount of oil added when from all reports, the pans although slightly different held the same amount. Well I now know why !! In the Jan/Fed Restorer page 16, it addresses the “Evolution of the Oil Pan Tray” . and, I quote “ during the Model A production years, there were several changes made to the tray. The first tray had very shallow narrow troughs as shown in the photo 1. The second version of the tray had shallow troughs as well. Sometime later the troughs were deepened and widened to the shape that remained beyond Model A production.”

No doubt about it, I have the earlier version tray with the narrow shallow troughs. This allows more oil to lay in the pan, less oil in the troughs and therefore reads higher on the stick if you add the same amount of oil as the later trays / pan. So, a change was 4.25 litres and now less oil to reach the full mark on the stick.
