Pulling engine in '40 sedan

Greetings, What are the proper steps in pulling the engine in my '40 sedan. I guess I mean that I do not want to invent the wheel when it comes to pulling it out.I would like to leave the trans in.I did a search, but I didn't find what I was looking for.I would kinda like a check list of things to remove or disconnect in order to reinstall without forgetting something. Some things are a given such as hood ,exhaust, radiator. What are some of the lessons that you could pass on to me to make this job efficient. I'm thanking you in advance. CB

CB,
A few months ago we pulled the flathead out of our ’39 CS, basically the same as the ’40.We left the hood on and pulled the front clip, including the radiator. I screwed up in my haste and forgot to remove the temp sending unit… Don’t make that mistake, and don’t forget to support the transmission. Here are a few photos of what we did.

Hope this helps. Vic

The engine can be pulled without removing the front clip or the hood. I removed the engine out of at least 3 40 Fords by removing the radiator and using a motor lift hooking it as close as possible to the engine with the intake removed. You will need to support the front end of the transmission.

I use a short piece of metal that will fit across the front wishbone to support the trans, remove the carb and the rest of parts as Ken said and go for it. Make up a set of
guide pins for the trans when you put it back in, makes it a whole lot easier

We pulled the radiator and grill, left the hood and fenders in place. Removing the engine stay rods from the frame make pulling the engine a lot easier.

Working alone, I found it easiest to remove only the hood and no other sheet metal. While you have engine out, take a look at the throwout bearing and pilot bearing in the flywheel. Also examine for worn clutch disc and flywheel. DON'T FORGET TO INSTALL THE THROWOUT BEARING BEFORE INSTALLING THE ENGINE. I forgot once! Also, take photos of how and where parts fit in case you forget. Make a detailed list of the steps you followed to remove the engine along with photos.

pull the hood, front grill, and radiator,,,I put a small jack and block of wood under the transmission and leave it there,,,make sure there's a wheel chock under the rear tire, you will need a cheery picker with a long arm, pull your floor boards and take bolts out of trans to bell housing,,disconnect everything attached to engine and label and place in ziplock bags,,,,,I always mark the wiring w/masking tape to identify where it goes...good luck!

I did it with the hood and front sheetmetal in place.
As said, pull the floorboards for access to the trans bolts. Pull the rad and pipes.
I don't have any hood helper springs so I tied the hood back to the rear of the car with a rope.
Decent Cherry picker engine crane and it'll come out quite easy.

Mart.
