Pull engine with transmission attached?

Hi all,

I’m going to be pulling the 8BA out of my ‘49 Shoebox. Does it make more sense to disconnect the transmission or pull it out with the engine? It’s a 3 speed non-OD.

Thanks in advance.

Guess it depends on your or your helpers skill in getting the trans lined back up when reinstalling the engine.

Can't speak to that exact application, but I prefer to pull transmissions with engines. It is much easier IMHO to stab a transmission outside.

If you don't need to work on the transmission, why pull it out?

Don't forget to reinstall the throwout bearing when reinstalling?
TAKE PHOTOS AS YOU GO.

I don't know about those '49s showboxes, but in the 52-54 years there is a cross member that the transmission bolts to. If you leave the transmission attached when you pull the engine then you'd save yourself removing that cross member. You can slide the transmission out once the engine is gone with that member in place.

When I bought my car the transmission was there but no engine. I have since removed the transmission so that I can put everything back at once. Even though that meant removing the cross member. Just seemed like a hassle to line up splines with the engine hanging from a hoist.

While getting everything test fitted I also decided that for me it was easier to mount the bellhousing to the transmission and attach both to the block. The other way around I was struggling to get the splined input shaft through the throwout bearing and then clutch disc with little visibility. Those '49 bellhousings have no inspection cover either.

Remember; If you pull the transmission first, there is nothing to support the rear of the engine. You either have to put it on blocks and/or a jack, or support it from above. We would put a 2X4 across the top of the rear of the front fenders and use a chain. If you did the latter, you could move the car around.
