Problems with starter rod hanging up

I'm having problems with the starter rod hanging up on the spark advance rod. The truck was restored and has very few starts and stops under it's belt. This problem just surfaced.

The starter rod is just tight enough to the spark rod to keep the starter turning when I engage the starter. Now I know why I see so many rods have been bent. Since I want to show the truck one for time before it becomes my driver I need to solve the problem without bending the spark rod to make clearance.

Any suggestions on how to adjust the starter switch so it will clear and not resort to bending any rods?

Are you talking about the short (6 inch ?) rod that operates the throttle? If so, the end near the engine can be bent up(towards the hood )to give a little clearence over the starter rod. Some body styles (180A?) require the rod be bent due to the "dropped" steering column.

Check end of spark rod where the spring is ,could be to long or short.
Steering coloum may need adjusting at tank mount?
all cowl frame bolts tight?
Something is out of alingment just a bit 1/16
Ive been thru this many times.

On the two tooth steering column it is possible to turn the steering column left or right to help correct the position of the throttle rod to clear the starter rod. You loosen the clamp by the steering box and the clamp under the gas tank and you will be able to twist the column. It may require a wrench to get the leverage necessary to move the column but it will work.
