Problems with Bratton's Bendix drive?

I recent'y ordered a new starter gear drive from Bratton's (the original style, not the barrel type) and discovered an apparent problem. The drive is designed in such a manner that when the piniongear spins out of engagement as the engine starts, it jams itself into into place on the drive shaft with just enough force that it can't release to re-engage with the ring gear when I next try to start the car. When I remove the starter, the gear can be jiggled loose, but it is clear what is happening.

This startter drive looks a little different from my old Bendix drive, so maybe it's a different design.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I like a thin coat of very light oil, such as some ATF on the helix. I'm not familure with the repro drive as I've only used old originals. Bert's I'm sure would have a good original drive. Bert's 800-321-1931

Called Bratton's. They suggested that machining compound may have made the pinion or shaft sticky. When I get a chance, I'll try cleaning it off and see if it still has a problem. Until then, my arm is getting a workout.
