Problems titling a speedster

Just wondering if anyone else has had problems getting a title for there speedster or car if it never had one... last month I went to the DMV asking what paper work I needed to get my speedster titled and they told me. After a month i went back today with all forms, signatures and pictures ready to go and after they looked at them they started asking questions, after chatting with them they basically told me the parts were probably stolen, and that I would have to get a bonded title which could take awhile. Thanks DMV.

I'm going to stick my neck way out here Jb and guess you told them you built it. From parts no less. If there's one thing that sets them off, and I don't care what State it is, it's a home built car. From parts. If this is the case you might try another DMV office and keep yer' trap shut...LOL. Seriously, don't volunteer ANYTHING.

Your Utah DMV webpage pretty well describes the way to go about getting a "specialty constructed vehicle title".

Seems a bond for value over $1000 is called for. Lots of paper work, and listing of parts bought and prices paid so Utah can collect sales tax on the pieces you used to build the Speedster or "specialty vehicle". Not have an existing title to an antique car in most states is a real problem. But some states do as Utah.

Built a 1915 speedster from parts, back in KY in the '80s. Had to go to Frankfort, state capital and appear in person with docs that had receipts and other requirements for my 'special built car'. At least KY accepted the motor number as the VIN, since a Model T is very old car, before VIN's. Didn't need an assigned VIN to be stamped anywhere on the speedster. But got the title!
