I am having a heck of a time trying to get my roof off. I got the center section out but can't get the side pieces to come off. There are three layers of metal visable from the inside. Is the middle layer attached to the quarter panels or the roof quarters? Also seems like the roof quarters are welded at intervals along the seem? Kinda leary of just going at it with a cut off wheel. Is there something I am missing here?

Some pics of the outside. I can slide a flat putty knife under the lip all the way around the outside. The PO did have bondo gooped in the seams that I removed.

I don't have a 29 std coupe, but I have a 28 special coupe and 29 phaeton. I have found than several places have spot welds that hold two section together (some even have bolt also). I found that using a Dremmel or RotoZip tool with a carbide burr cutter works pretty well to grind out the spot weld on one on the sides (the easier side get to). The problem is locating some of the spot welds. I usually sandblast the area and that then usually shows a series of depressions where the spot welds are. It appears from your first picture the section shows some spot welds. Hope this helps.

No, my special coupe has wood around the beltrail. The areas I was refering to with the spot welds were where the trunk T strips on my coupe and phaeton are.

I have a 29 coupe and there was few spot welds along the bolted seam I remember using a putty knife to drive in to locate the spot welds between the window and body panel . And if I remember correctly there was some extra metal along the seam to double up for strength .

It seems like you are doing a lot of work to remove the top. It sounds like the top is not going to blow off. I would consider using a rust killer type product and call it good. It does not look like you have rust on the outside. If you have holes through to the outside maybe you are going in the right direction.

Your avatar is scary. See you on the HAMB

Yeah there are rust through holes here and there. The drivers side is even worse. May have a replacement for that side in the works.
