Problem with front cast iron drums

Hi guys,
About a year ago I purchased a new set of cast iron drums (with hubs swaged etc ready to bolt on). Today I went to install the fronts and found they're hitting against the grease baffles. I removed the grease baffles and they go all the way on. I searched the archives and haven't found anyone else with this problem. I bought them from MACS and will call them tomorrow, and see what they say. car is an Oct. 28 RPU. I will take pics tomorrow and post. Thanks in advance. Brian

If you installed reproduction baffles, that is probably the problem. The ones on the market are made in India and everything about them is wrong. They are also dangerous as they can bind up the front wheel bearing. I ran into this problem a few years ago. I left them off for at least two years before I chanced upon some originals at a swap meet. My Model A seemed to get along fine without them.

Thanks Tom, I didn't change the grease baffles, don't know if the prior owner might have. Do you know if they make modern type press in grease seals for the front wheels, and eliminate the grease baffles altogether?

I'm wondering: Are these baffles a wear item? My originals were fine. What could make it necessary to replace them?

Thanks fior the reply Jim, yes they came with races installed already. I have to put some photos of them up, there is a really noticable difference between the ones I had on the car and the new ones. The inside part of the hub is massive compared to the original steel ones. I'm thinking this is the problem. Brian

I think the 28,s used a different grease baffle & hub than 29-31. A later hub with early baffle will cause it to interfere.
