Problem with 1953 clutch pedal

I have only owned this car for less than a year, so I am still learning about it. When I push the clutch pedal down too far, the pedal fails to return and the ****** seems to stay in neutral. This only happens in reverse. If the car is on a slope where it an roll, the car will go into gear and all is good. If the car is on a flat surface, the car will stay in neutral until someone can push the car to start it rolling. Then it will go into gear. As long as the clutch pedal is not pushed down far, the problem does not happen. Checked the clutch pedal return spring and even added a second return spring. With 2 return springs, the problem seems to happen less, but still happens. Someone suggested possible problem with the pressure plate. The clutch pedal is not getting caught on the floor boards or carpet. Looking for advice.

Make sure the clutch is adjusted to specs. Your symptoms can happen when there is too much free play at the top.

Did you check clutch pedal FreePlay? There should be about an inch and a half of free travel at the top of the pedal swing. The pedal may be returning now, but if this isn’t adjusted correctly, it will affect how the clutch operates. Do you have a repair manual?…..Mark
