Private Messaging

Not wanting to embarrass anyone but I must ask about Private Messages.
I recently received a Private Message from someone on this Forum who I had originally sent a PM to. What I received in return was my whole PM with no answer to any questions I had asked. Is this a way of telling me they don't want to communicate with me or am I missing something here?
Thanks to all for your time.

I think that someone probably made an innocent mistake. Don't take it personal. If someone did not want to communicate with you they would just ignore the message.

The original post you send always comes with reply. Did you scroll down to see if there was an answer? I'd resend the question, maybe the person on the other end isn't up to speed on how PM's work.

I had somebody asking me some questions, and I got a couple of responses with nothing in them. When I looked closer they were there,I just had not seen them.I missed them because they were small, just things like,Thank you,or,I will take a look. They were buried between the lines. At one time I found a bunch of messages to me that I had not seen.On my computer the header for messages is hidden on the right, and to see it I have to walk the screen over.I wasn't being impolite and not answering,I just never saw them.Same thing with the avatars. On Petes all I can see is 70b unless I walk the screen over that way.I never looked at my own until somebody was talking about locations a while back.I thought locations were on all of them until then.I didn't know mine was not there.

Theres no way to scroll down on this particular PM. After looking closer I see just a few words have which seem to be the begining of the answer. I will re-send and see what happens. I some times don't understand these computors.
Thanks to all for responding.

What I'd like to know is just how private is a private message? Can the Fordbarn webmaster, etc. read your so called private message (and even your e-mail sent via this site)?

Regarding private messages, they are stored in a database. They are stored both in the recipients inbox, and the senders outbox. An Administrator can read those messages.

I don't know what you mean by 'email sent via this site'?

So it's an invasion of privacy and there's nothing completely private about it at all other than not being on the main board.

What I meant by email sent via this site is when you type an email message in the window or box when you want to send an email to someone on their profile page.

Larry, ive wodered about the email thing because i have no knowledge of this sites privacy policy, or the integrety of the people who own it, ive always thought that private messages could be intercepted but it does surprise me that emails can be read, big brother at work?

It's a "private" message because only the sender and recipient see it, not the whole board. There is no "invasion of privacy" because you, at least tacitly, agreed to the mods being able to access your postings when you agreed to use their site.

There is really NO privacy on the internet. Someone, somewhere can see everything. You should never put anything on the world wide web unless you don't expect it to be out in the world. Just look at all the information "accidentally" released by the government, or by disgruntled government employees who disagree with a given policy, or kids just having fun and hacking into databases.

Don't let your paranoia get in the way of posting information about Model A Fords. Big Brother is watching, but probably doesn't give a damn.

you may be right , but it says private and you would expect it to be, if it wasnt supposed to be completly private why doest the owner post Parcially private, your message can be read by the moderator,? i think that would only be fair dont you?

*Invasion of privacy?
I expect a little surveillance & monitoring of this site (provided freely for the entire world to enjoy) could be beneficial in saving it from meeting a similiar demise as the former Fordbarn.
Security & rights will cost you extra.
Did you want fries with that

ford1,

Nothing in the world is totally private except maybe your own unspoken thoughts... I don't think that the government has figured out how to monitor those yet.

The term Private Message is a standard term used as a title for a message sent from one forum user to another forum user that is not posted so it can be seen by all members of the forrm.

If you are that concerned about privacy, you really need to disconnect your computer from the internet. As long as you are on-line, you are exposed to some extent.

As 5window posted, just because the moderators of a forum may technically have access to private messages does not mean that they give a darn about them, or that they have the time, or interest in reading them.

No reason for paranoia.

Let's talk about Model A Fords.

You Libs can disagree and go along like sheep all you want but if anyone other than the sender and recipient can read it then it ain't private!

Come on-you're getting politically again, and that will get this thread shut down. Why is it always the "liberals" with you? That has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. We're talking about the ability to send a message to just one person without the entire board being privy to your thoughts. That's a pretty minor item in the scope of the universe.

I raise sheep and they hardly "go along". They all want to be first, they all think the grass is greener if they can just cut the other sheep off and get ahead, they will do anything except what you expect them to do. If you think they're docile-try having one can of grain to share with three sheep. Don't go bad-mouthing my sheep, thank you very much.

Reality. This is Ryan's site-he makes the rules and the moderators just enforce them. You want to swim in this pool, you obey the lifeguard's rules. You have no rights here, only the privileges of belonging. If you have something that private to say, ask for the recipient's address or phone number and contact them directly.

there is nothing political about any of these posts, we were talking only about wheather a private message is private, and that means no one else but the person you sent it to and read it, if anyone else can read it, then its not private and i should be stated as such, Larry, im with you, its either private or not,if its a blatant lie then we should know about it, Ryan can settle this, all he has to do is post if its private or not, that would settle the matter once and for all

When I was a young kid, the gang (a bad word now) had fun sharing messages in invisible and disappearing ink. If our moms had seen some of them it would have been scandal. Nothing on the net is ever invisible, nor disappears. Count on scandal. The fun is gone. :(
