Short of adding an electric fuel pump for start-up purposes, do any of you Barners prime your flatheads for that initial start after vehicle sits a day or two? How much gas do you use, etc.????
If you are losing all of the gas in your carburetor in a couple of days, it is time to have the carburetor rebuilt. It is leaking gas and the unburned gas will contaminate your oil.
On my 41 (which sits a week or two at a time) I just push the starter button a few seconds and then turn on the ignition and pull choke(depending on outside temperature ) and it starts right up. If I don't do this it takes a while to start. On the 49 it starts right up ,but it's driven more.
It should not need priming after just a few days of sitting. I just pour a shot of gas straight down the carb throat if my 39 has been parked a few weeks, hit the starter button and it takes off. Had to do this on an IH truck last week but it has other carb problems.
I use an electric pump and a double throw toggle. I wire one side of the double throw switch to the start side of the starter relay and the other side of the toggle to the hot side. That way the pump is only on during the start cycle unless it's needed. g
You're losing gas from the bowl. Priming shouldn't be needed for short rest spans. Even when waking up after the winter shutdown, the pump and carb refill themselves.
