I believe the vendors knew it before we Barners wanted to believe it. So many parts were becoming unavailable. Now it has become difficult to sell good parts not only for lack of interest but the "barnfinds" just aren't there to be found. The project cars are much fewer in numbers.
As for Gary's enjoyment of "just bringing them back to life" that is what some of us go for and can afford more easily. It is so nice that we all find common ground in the love of these cars and can help and appreciate the folks who choose their own level of intertainment. We are truly a FORD FAMILY, huh?
Don, I have for decades enjoyed the restoration process much more than the actual use of my cars.
That being said, I'd never restored a car with profit in mind. My primary motivations were to test my personal abilities and to bring a piece of history back. As fortune (blessing) would have it, I was able to profit from each restoration. However, that was "then". Today is a different story entirely. Today, I know darn well I would NOT make a cent on a full restoration and would in fact, lose a lot of money.
While there are a few, just a few, folks that still want true #1 restorations, that number has dwindled. And those few realize quite clearly that their investment is one based on their passion, not the vehicles future worth.
That part of the equation has pretty much always been true.
Many years ago, perhaps ten or more, I had begun to believe this market was set to implode. That's when I started in earnest selling off many of my cars and parts. I am glad I did as what I believed was going to happen, well, we are all seeing it today.
It will get worse.
I will keep some of my cars regardless of what the future (values) may hold. To reiterate, this is firstly a passion of mine. I fully expect the values to drop... I just don't care. Simply looking at them brings me so much joy. That is where the value is to me, and if I dare suggest, to you.
