press on cam gear

Brendan, The timing gear can be pressed on the cam hub incorrectly on a '35 21 stud engine, (don't ask me how I originally found out about this ;)) as it is not actually keyed in any way. It's just a press fit. There is a mark (line) on the steel insert of the timing gear and a mark (line) on the hub of the cam. These marks/lines must line up. You can check this pretty easily by removing the timing gear cover, cleaning the cam hub and cam gear steel insert, and see were the above mentioned marks are located in relation to each other. If you ever need to replace a pressed on type timing gear, without the need to remove the valves and cam, let me know, I have a procedure for doing this. JM

i just wont to troubleshoot this engine before i install it in my truck. it was rebuilt about 35 years ago . and a friend of mine put it in his truck and could not get it to run right.he thought that the valve timing was off. i just wont to make sure.
thanks Brendan
