Power Loss After Carb Rebuild

I’m still trying to fine tune the car after rebuilding the carburetor. I replaced the manifold gaskets with new copper type and gland rings. It was immediately clear that they had been leaking because I needed to raise the idle since it had been adjusted to compensate for the leak. The car drives better and has less tendency for the idle to drop when coming to a stop. There’s just one thing going on that I’m not sure if it’s a fuel mixture or timing issue. I’m getting an after-fire pop out the exhaust when letting off the throttle on upshifts. More so after the longer pull through second. It’ll also get a slight pop if it had been under load in third gear and you let off and it transitions to overrun. That part seems like it might just be normal exhaust burble though. The popping on upshifts seems like either a rich or too slow timing condition. Adjusting the GAV doesn’t seem to change the popping but it definitely runs best at 1/4 turn out. I’m wondering if the timing is a little too late. The advance lever allows the full range of advance to where it bottoms out on the distributor opening. I need to fully advance it for it to accelerate without hiccups though. Even putting the lever to about 9 o’clock will give a little stumble occasionally. It can also climb hills under load without any pinging whatsoever at full advance. It is a stock head though. Is it normal for these to want that much advance?

Thanks for the update, glad it's running good for you now.
Check your exhaust manifold for any hairline cracks when you replace the gasket.
Vacuum leaks can really mess up you idle.
On your throttle shaft, remove it and add some solder to the shaft, then file it to fit the carburetor. It's a easy way to tighten up the shaft (farmer fix) works great.
