Pouring Oil In '47 Fordor V8

It takes forever to pour a quart of oil in my '47 stock V8 engine. I have to slowly trickle it in or it will overflow at the top. Is this normal? I have changed out the fuel pump and standpipe. Could the standpipe be installed wrong and cause this problem or could it be something else?

I don't think it's normal either. I have never seen that before. Seems like something is partially blocking the opening in the filler tube causing the oil to not drain very fast as it's being poured in.

Also consider the viscosity going in and the sludge that may be present in the valley.

My very first oil change turned out to be a terribly sludged valley. Manifold came off, then I scooped, wiped and flushed with a garden sprayer of diesel (which then just poured out the drain) Followed up with a short cycle oil change (200 miles or so) and good to go.

Except....this last time I poured 20w50 in and it regurgitated. That stuff went in pretty thick - I don't think I'll use it again. I wanted to see if it cured very low operating pressure. Startup pressure came up to very high with the 50 weight, but once it warmed up it went back down to 5 or 10 lbs.

I'll go back to 10w30 or 10w40.

I have been using 10w30 oil. Could sludge actually be blocking the area around the fill tube? I have never pulled the intake. Never thought it necessary.

should flow in pretty quick. Definitely should not have to dribble it in from my experience.

Mine goes in about as fast as I can open the quart bottles. Am using 10/40. Think you'd benefit from pulling the intake and checking the fuel pump stand again for obstruction.

I've had occasion to work on a few granny cars over the years. You know the type. The ones that were driven once a week down to the store. After it cooled off, they drove it to the post office a block away. Then drove the two blocks back home. The old cars never were warmed all the way up. The intake manifold valley area would be half full of crusty sludge. It's hard to get out of there too.
