potential catastrophe?

A couple buddies of mine were trying to drill out a broken head stud, using some kind of a guide, and managed to almost completely miss the stud. They drilled an 1/8th inch hole, half an inch deep just overlapping into the stud but mostly off the stud. Needless to say, they're bummed. They think they have ruined their block but I don't think so. They did manage to drill another hole that's centered in the stud but are worried about what to do next and wanted me to ask for advice on the forum. Any and all comments welcome and thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good way to do it, better than their method, that's for sure.

But what about the hole they drilled that missed the stud and went in parallel to the stud hole? I think that is their big concern.

Thanks again for all the help.

If the hole is overlaping the stud is it possible to enlarge the hole and either retap for a larger stud or use a helicoil . Also while I have not tried it myself have had a few people recommend heating the stud and applying wax to aid removal of a stuck stud

You can buy studs from some of the A suppliers that 1/2"NC on one end & 7/16NF on the other.,or as stated, use a thread insert in the block.Ive removed broken studs by welding a washer & nut on the stud with a buzz box welder & it worked fine.
