Greetings!! I recently started to look for an older f100 and came across a 1964 w/ a 292. The story from the current owner is that it came from California originally ( I'm in Michigan) and only has 13,000 miles on it. Body is solid with faded paint and some surface rust. When the engine runs it pushes steam out of the dipstick and the vented filler cap! He says its missing the pcv system but he says it doesn't burn a noticable amount of oil. Should this motor have down draft tube?? I've done a moderate amount of wrenching on cars but mostly maintenance items. What exactly should I be looking for on this motor to know I'm not buying a shot motor? Original motor withe oil bath air filter. He wants $2500. Ill try posting a link to his ad. Thanks

What's he mean it's missing the PCV system? All it needs is a hose and a PCV valve, cost ~a buck and 98¢. Tell him to put it on.

You sure it's steam and not crankcase vapors (blowby)? If it is not excessive yes a PCV system would return it to the engine to be burned.

A '64 with a PCV should not have a draft tube, but since it is not vented it is pushing the vent gasses out the filler cap and dip stick. Sounds to me like the guy is right, the PCV system is missing.

My question is why he doesn't have one on it. Seems it would be easier to sell if it wasn't blowing smoke. Just ensure he is not blowing smoke up your A$$...

Tell him to put one on, parts are cheap. Then see if it's still blowing steam.

OK if it IS "Blowing Steam", that could mean BAD things, blown head gasket, cracked block, etc; Then I say RUN, don't walk, away.

if its steam it will go away in about 10 to 15 seconds, if its oil smoke it will take 15 mins or so to clear up, either way its going to cost a lot of money to fix, does it smoke out exhaust pipe? if so same thing applies water vapor goes away quick, oil smoke stays a long time

California cars and light trucks got PCV's sooner than the other 49 states because of the smog problem. For a guy in Michigan, to be able to buy a California truck with no rust that may be the deal of a lifetime. Engines are cheap and easy. Most Michigan trucks that age are long gone by now.

All 64 trucks came from the factory with a PCV.The one on that truck may stuck from sitting around so long.New valves are available from parts stores.

I take back what I said, that is a good price for a rust free California Truck. If the engine is bad you should be able to find a replacement.

Still puzzled why the PCV is missing tho...

Ok so I got the truck. He was pretty firm but I paid $2400. Here's the specs-
1964 F100 w/ 292 (original) and originally had 3 on the tree, since converted to toploader four on the floor. I have copies of the titles from Cali and Arizona where it spent most of its life. It stayed in the same family until the last owner. Has not been driven in a Michigan winter. The last owner replaced the rims and tires, new fuel pump, new plugs and some misc small items. Not really sure on the mileage as the speedo doesn't work. When they changed the ****** they didn't adapt the speedo cable to the trans so I'll have to see what kind of ****** it is and see if it can be adapted to it. Other items that will need to be dealt with are-
Brakes!! Not bad for manual drums but first pump has fair amount of give and second pump is much better but it pulls hard to the left! Fuel gauge doesn't work, no dash lights and would like to add some kind of seat belts (especially since my kids will be riding on occasion).
As far as the motor, I seem to be getting less vapor now. Not sure if there was some moisture in the motor from sitting? No water on thee dipstick and she runs pretty decent. Seems to have a little hesitation accelerating but idles nice and smooth I put probably 100 miles on it yesterday. There is what I believe to be a draft tube on back of motor where vapors were coming out but nothing is attached to it. I'm trying to attach pics but seem to be having issues!

Good Deal!! Welcome to the Wonderful World of Y-Blocks. And to The Barn... Most of us are harmless curmudgeons (old or otherwise).

On posting pictures I find it easier to upload to Flicker then copy and paste the "BBCode". The pictures from my albums on The Barn don't always show up!!

Probably time for doing some brake work, the pull could be a front hose swelling internally swapping out the master cylinder to a dual is a good upgrade Part# NM 1386 at Autozone for a new unit $46,Enjoy your new ride! ;)

Sorry for the huge images but finally able to post some pics. I included one of what I believe to be the road draft tube. SHould I just add a section of hose to this or can I plug a PCV valve into it? Also I believe the trans that's in it is a T98

Ok, I'll post them to a hosting site and link them. They show up on my phone and computer but seem to take awhile to load.

Hopefully this works

The pcv is there on your truck. It's screwed into the intake manifold in front of the carburetor. There is supposed to be a tube running from the pcv back to the tube that you show in the picture.

PCV location

This is the place where it screws into the manifold - threads are on the suction side of the valve.

Hose goes back to the open port you have shown on the back of the valley cover.

Great! Thanks for the help on the pcv.
Next question- Is there a way to adapt the factory speedo/odo cable to a t98 trans? The original trans was the three on a tree. The original cable is there and functions but needs to be hooked to current trans. The trans is stamped t98 and reverse is up and to the right.
