possible exhaust leak

When I decelerate, like going down a hill in 2nd gear, or even let off the gas to shift gears, I get a popping sould as if it coming from the carburator. Can this be caused by an exhault leak? If so, can it be leaking from the muffler to exhaust header connection, or exhaust header to the engine head or both?

Try opening the GAV 1/4 turn. The situation you describe usually means a too lean mixture.

Timing is another consideration.

Also some poofing \ coughing from the carb is normal IMO and without an air cleaner its a lot more noticable. All of my ATV's with carburetors always do it occasionally when using the engine to slow up.

My Model A also does a bit of light backfiring when decelerating. I consider it normal.

When the repro switch was acting up, the exhaust was exploding through the muffler, louder than shotgun blasts. I was lucky my Aries stayed together.

i get a little poping on decel if my gav is closed. if i crack it open it stops
you need to distinguish between an exhaust leak or a lean pop. do you have any exhaust leakage/sound on accell?????

Popping through the carb on decel is also a symptom of leaky valves.
