popout cable clamp

I need to install a new popout cable as well as the clamp on the head. Am I safe removing the nut on the head to install the clamp? Or is it better left alone?

Currently there is no clamp.

I believe the only purpose of that clamp is to make it harder to hot-wire the car by removing the distributor and disconnecting the cable. If you are not worried about that happening you could just leave the clamp off, and not have to mess with your head. :-)

My car does not have that clamp, and I have no intention of installing one.

I would take a minute to drain off some coolant to a level below the head in case you get a phone call or something and have to leave the nut off...

I had the same question cause I was concerned about leaks. I was told to wait until engine was cold. This works at home but if you are on a club tour you can't wait to swap out a dist assy. I finally settled on an extra long bolt with one nut properly tightened down on the head, put the cable clamp on the nut and hold it down with another nut. Then you can change the dist on the side of the road with the engine hot. OR don't use the clamp at all.
