pop rivits for top

Hi all
doing a restore on a '30CCPU.
A prior owner has installed plate and welded up the top of the cab, including the visor.
Not a real bad job (lots of bondo).
I want to install the original top material and am thinking of drilling some 1" holes for ventilation and use 1/8" pop rivets for the fabric and hide em. because the slots for the nails are covered up.
anybody tried this?
thanks
Greg

I did my daughters 31 standard coupe, sort oif like that . Someone else, back in the day had welded a metal insert in the roof . I smoothed up yhe welds and finished as necessary with filler. I fitted drilled and installed the metal moldings with screws. I then removed the moldings, taped off the area and sprayed the top with yellow 3M vinyl top adhesive . I then sprayed the back side of the cobra grain material with adhesive.. I let the adhesive sort of dry . With my best help on one side and me on the other we we fitted the material to the top . With the 3M adhesive it is possible to unstick and restretch the materal if you get a wrinkle . I trimed the excess material with a single edge razor blade . I reinstalled the metal moldings and then painted the car . Being in the colision repair business at the time, we had to replace vinyl tops that got damaged in wrecks .This seemed the way to go and was no problem for us . i'm not sure what you mean by drilling one inch holes for ventilation??? I wouldn't do it! The only holes that need to be drilled is for the moldings . Here is a pic of my daughters coupe that we did the top on...

I had thought of that but the concern was the foam padding, sounds like you achieved the correct look without it,might just go that way.
I remember way back making look alike vynal tops by just spraying black paint without thinner

I didn't use any padding. I remember the spray on vinyl tops, We used a craftsman pressure feed gun for those. It was a special paint for the purpose. I use to thin the last coat a small amount with slow lacquer thinner to give it a little sheen so that it would be easier to clean. I sprayed a lot of them in the 60s.
