Poor Quality Replacement Parts

Based on past postings on think the multi locks are the way to go. Engine is out on a stand, manifolds off, much easier to install and adj than when in the car. JMO

So the motor is out of the car and now is the time to make an adjustment. Our local club guys all recommended the single locks over the multi's for ease of use. No one had ever seen this before.

What are the preferred lifters?

If you look at the contact base of the used lifters you will see a circular wear pattern that is smaller in diameter than the pad. The steeper/ faster the cam lift acceleration/ deceleration ramps are, and the smaller the cam base circle is, the larger that contact circle becomes. The contact circle is not a function of total lift.

The double lock type lifters (lock nut) hold their setting but have a smaller face than the single locks. The double locks are OK for a stock cam, but may be too small for performance grinds. The main problem with the singles is they loose their lock stiffness because the threads hammer and burnish themselves into a nice slick fit. On the last set of singles I used, I disassembled and degreased them, then sandblasted both the internal and external threads. You may want to tighten the interference too, then reassemble with a drop of engine oil.

The second lifter problem is that the face on both the lift pad and the adjustment bolt are not always correct. Both should have a fine-ground appearance with an almost imperceptible crown. The bolts often have a '***' from a lathe facing operation that must be removed. Reworking both ends with a fine belt on a expanding rubber wheel may be necessary. I use a 400 grit 3M Cubitron Trizact belt on a 12" wheel with coolant for that kind of stuff. Takes a practiced touch.

Use an EP lithium + MoS2 (Moly) lube on cam/ lifter assembly.

Cam lube is a good idea on break-in. Also instructions on performance cams recommend staring the engine, immediatly rev to at least 1500 rpm and hold that rpm for a few minutes.
Rotella oil and Rotella T don't have zddp any more. If you want oil with ZDDP in it go to your local motercycle shop!
