Police B head faster idle??

Hi all,

I just put a Police B head on my 30 A. I LOVE IT!!!!

However, it seems to idle faster. Does that sound right? When I pull the timing lever down till it starts to run bad, and then back it off a little, it seems to be idling faster then my stock head did.

The idle sounds normal when the timing lever is almost all the way up. But I've read and been told you should pull it down till it runs bad, then back if off a little. The right idle lever is all the way up during his.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Banky

Higher compression ratio will make the point at which the engine idle *smooth* come at a different point in advance/retard.

Higher compression ratio also is more efficient than your former head. Perhaps it doesn't need as much fuel as it needed to maintain a certain speed? Now because of efficiency increase you're using what fuel gets there to better effect - and higher speed.

This a little speculative. The first effect (advance/retard) I have had personal experience with. The second effect not so much - or I didn't notice it.

The higher compression head will idle faster because the firing will be more powerful. That is the point of an HC head. Adjust the timing to whatever runs best. Too much advance and you will get detonation. In my rig I got a click sound under heavy load. Back it off a touch from that and you are OK.
When you get used to it, you can play with the timing lever for different situations. One spot for touring, back it off a little when going uphill, total retard when going down hill will help a little on compression braking because the firing is delayed and not producing as much power. Kinda fun to do, and makes you a better driver.

I seriously can't believe the difference the head made. I'm not looking to hot rod around at all, but just climb hills at an acceptable speed. I love it!
