Polarizing 55 Ford generator

I just finished cleaning up my generator commutator and brushes then re-installed everything. When I touched the field wire to the battery wire at the regulator to re-polarize the generator there was a very heavy spark created by touching the two wires together. I double checked all the wiring and connections and that is all good. Whenever I have polarized a generator before there was a weak spark. Is there a problem ???

Sometimes it makes a small spark, sometimes a big spark. If the smoke is still in the regulator, take it for a ride to see if its OK.

Generator light is still on. With the engine running, I unhooked one of the battery cables and the engine died, which should mean that the generator is not producing anything. Prior to re-installing everything, I had the system bench tested and they said everything was OK. So I am stumped. I believe the generator is not working. Am I right ?

Found out what the problem was ! The Field coils inside the generator had become grounded. I suspected thats what it was. My regulator got fried. Had to insulate the coils, get a new reg and now it works like a charm.
