Polarize 6v generator

Hey everybody, another rookie question: how do I polarize my new 6v generator, and what happens if I don't? Thank you in advance for any help!

Does the ammeter show a charge now? If so, you should be fine. But, flashing an A generator is easy. Start the monster and then jump across the terminals on the cutout for a nano-second.

If you do not have a diode in your cutout, just use a jumper across the front and rear connecting tabs of the cutout, don't touch the cover. 1 or 2 seconds usually does the trick. This is for the original setup only.

If don't polarize gen, is there any adverse effect? Or it just won't charge? Nervous cuz have burned up gens/alts before

You might get lucky and have the generator charge without polarizing it, but why take a chance. It only takes a second to jump the two cutout terminals to apply 6 volts to the generator output stud, which then sets the field pole shoes to the correct polarity.

If it isn't correctly polarized, you could damage the generator or wiring. Later generators with voltage regulator could also damage the regulators.
