Plug wire crimper

I just went through a previous thread touching on this subject but have some specific ?s. I purchased the wires, recommended by Bubba from Speedway because I wanted 7mm, spiral wound wire, molded 90* plug ends and straight ends at dist., for my '50.
I'm looking to buy some good crimpers to put the dist. ends on. I found a few with removable jaws that provide many crimping options that I would use. One is the MSD unit PN 35051. There are several others (Taylor 43400, Tool Aid 18980 and 18960 and Pertronix T3001. All these crimpers are promoted for use on 8 and 8.5mm wires. Has anyone had experience with these for crimping our 7mm wires? I'm concerned about getting a tight crimp. Thanks,
Howard

I am wondering what the distributor end terminals that need to be crimped on look like? The terminals I use on earlier Ford distributors are soldered on. I think this gives about the best connection you can get.

John,
I'm not sure the resistor type plugs can be soldered. I have soldered the braided plug wires in the past. One of the suppliers, (may be Speedway), has a video showing the strip, prep. and crimp procedure using one the crimp tools referred to in my thread above.

I have owned a set of plug wire crimpers for over 30 years. I got them at Napa and they are Belden. They will do 7mm wires with either straight ends or 90 degree ends. Love them.

Or you can make your own out of a pair of old rusty pliers that has worked every time that it had to over the last 20 plus years.:)

Okay, when you said spiral wound wire I was thinking maybe copper.

I use the MSD jaws in a Ideal Industries ratcheting frame and they work great. I use another tool to 'nudge' and hold the plug fitting in place and then throw the whammies on it with the ratchet tool.
I've never done 7mm but I'm sure it'd work fine as it rolls the ends around - worst case you can add a little shim stock under the backside of the fitting and move it closer into the the curved part that rolls the sides into the plugwire.

OJ, you read my mind. The shim might be the way to go for the few times they'll be used for 7mm.
I have sent messages to MSD and Tool Aid asking if their tools will work on 7mm wires. I like Tool Aid set 18980 or 18960 because they come in a container so I wouldn't be looking all over for the different jaws as I need them. Both MSD and Tool Aid get high marks on Amazon. We'll see. I'll share the manufacturers response if I get one. Thanks,
Howard

I've used the Taylor crimpers (two aluminum blocks) and they worked very well. However, it was the 8mm wires, not the 7 but I don't see why they wouldn't work with the 7's

Heard back from S&G. My thoughts are that most of these ratcheting crimpers will do the 7mm wire terminals but here's what S&G says:

Howard,
As you mentioned, the Die Set is designed for 8mm and 8.5mm spiral core spark plug wire but at trade shows some people have advised they use it for 7mm and 9mm. We can only recommend it for 8mm and 8.5mm.

Thank you for your interest in our products.

Bob Platt / S & G Tool Aid Corp.

There may be some CYA in the response. I have yet to hear from MSD.

As I said above, S&G got back to me. I had not heard from MSD so I called their tech. line yesterday and asked if their 35051 crimper would work on 7mm terminations. I was told that it would. Based on that response, I ordered the crimper along with 3 additional sets of jaws. (Not cheap).
Earlier today I got an email from MSD saying that the 35051 would NOT work on 7mm wires. Go figure.
This isn't the forum where I should share my reply!
Thanks to all for your input to my thread,
Howard

Howard,it's funny how you get different answers from the same company, the tech.
form MSD told me that their crimper would only work with the larger 8-8.5mm wire.
I ended up with an Accel crimper from Summit that wil do 7mm,it also comes with a bunch of other dies too. It's on sale this month if your MSD doesn't work out for you.

Hey Joe, I didn't hear back after the reply I mentioned above, so I called to see what was going on. The tech. asked if he could get back to me after he checked on my concern. About 30 mins. later he got back to me. He tried the crimper on some 7mm wires and found that he was able to make a tight crimp with no problem. I asked him if the wire centered properly for the strip operation and he said it worked fine. I thanked him and asked him to share this info. with the other techs so potential customers wouldn't be mislead as I was. Next is my test when it gets here.
