planetary gears

Hi guys , got my overdrive apart to examine for a couple issues .. In regards to the planetary gears in the cage , without the gear assembly inside it , are the 3 gears supposed to be loose and floppy .. never had one apart before ... thanks Fred

The answer to the question is…..no….the three pinion gears in the planetary housing should not be loose and wiggly. They ride on very slender needle bearings. Those needles and/or the little axle they ride on are probably damaged or broken. The planetary gear was not designed to be serviced or repaired…..you have to replace it as one assembly.

It might be possible to find a new old stock planetary gear out there but they’re a pretty scarce needle in a large haystack. Try to find a good used one in a core transmission if you can. My experience with cores is that I’m lucky if one out of every three is usable. You have to clean them thoroughly to be sure that the pinion gears are okay.

thanks Mac.. all three of mine are very sloppy , I thought that can't be right and that is probably the source of my gear noise while in overdrive.. thanks again If anyone out there has one please let me know

You can still buy a Mitchel overdrive for a model A or early V8. Call them and ask if any of their new parts can be used.

Barnfind08 or Southside Obsolete may be a place to start. Stacy Brown up in Arlington used to have NOS stuff like that but sadly he is gone now and I don't know where his hoard of parts went. I see them on flea-pay now and then but haven't looked for a while. There may be different versions of some R10 overdrive parts so it pays to find the latest Ford or Mercury part number to replace what you may have. The R11s have four pinions so they are very different. They were used in Lincolns and later Ford products that had the T85 transmission.
