I did remove shims and tightened the caps until I had resistance on turning the crank.

Have you used them? There have been reports that grit embeds in the teflon buttons and wears grooves in the cylinder walls. Some VW and Harley guys use them in rebuilds, the reports are mixed. Some say never without filtered oil.

I use them in everything I rebuild, Model A, VW, etc. I've never had a problem or seen any wear in either the button or cylinder.

Recently installed a new set of pistons that do nut use the bent wire type of wrist pin clips, but use the more modern internal "C" clip design. These pistons did not have the slit in the skirt either. Piston top was marked with the oversize amount, which was oriented to the front of the engine. The "C" clip grooves are located further back in the wrist pin bore, closer to the pin.
