Piston and Rod orientation

I forgot which way my pistons and rods were oriented. 1940 V8-60. Don't see any wrist pin offset, no marks on piston tops or rods. Can they go either way?

If there is a champhered edge on the big end of the connecting rod, I place that edge to the cheek of the crank shaft.

If they are original rods for the engine they were marked L1.2.3.4, R1.2.3.4, the numbers go to the front and toward the pan rail---new rods came unmarked and fit either way----

I am familiar with them being installed with the stamped numbers toward the oil pan rail but do the numbers really have to all fact toward the front of the engine?
